Phoebe Nah- The Singing Man

The Singing Man was adapted from a West African folktale, and it is a story about a boy named Banzar who lived in a small village near Lagos. He loved music and playing the flute, but his parents and two brothers sent him away from home saying that being a musician could not make a fortune. Banzar traveled for a bit and learned more about music over time and eventually went to the Feast of Igodo, the yam festival that the king was to attend. Banzar played his drums and flute for the king who was very impressed with his musical talents. The king commissioned Banzar to be his personal musician and gave him a home, money, and servants. One day Banzar saw his two brothers in a marketplace, but they did not recognize him. He had them bring him to his old home where his parents were and revealed his identity to his family. Banzar shared his wealth with his family and they came to learn the significance of music. This book could be very encouraging to children who have passions for things that might not necessarily be seen as the most glamorous or promising. It would help them to remember that if they are passionate about something, they should pursue it.
