Meet the Orchestra
by Ann Hayes, educates the reader about the orchestra and the many parts that
make it whole. Hayes’s text is valuable in that it names and describes each
instrument in score order. Though the reader may not identify this strategy
used by Hayes, the introduction of the concept of score order is valuable to the reader.
Hayes also groups the instruments into “families.” Karmen Thompson’s illustrates
are descriptive and educational. Matching the description of Hayes’s text,
Thompson’s illustrations educate the reader about each instrument,
which family they belong to, how they differ, and their place in score order. Meet the Orchestra is a great book to
have in a music classroom and use as an aid for
teaching these valuable concepts
to a beginning orchestra.
