I Know a Shy Fellow Who Swallowed a Cello
Barbara S. Garriel
Illustrated by John O’Brien
Once one reads the title of this book, you immediately draw
parallels to the other children’s book I know an old lady who swallowed a
fly. It follows the same basic premise, where the main character continues
swallowing items until they can’t swallow anymore. This book introduces a lot
of instruments to the reader, such as the kazoo, the violin, the trombone, and
of course, the cello. It’s a great way for young children to be introduced to a
number of instruments that they might want to play. It’s a comedic book with
plenty of beautiful art, and you can teach the basic couplet form with the way
the story is written. There’s a lot of great rhyming in this book, which helps
keep the rhythm of the story going. This book is a great way to introduce basic
rhythm to students as well, as you can read the story almost in iambic
pentameter, which appears in Shakespeare, and in music.
