Alison LeBeda - M is for Music

M is for Music is a children's picture book by Kathleen Krull. This book uses lots of alliteration to describe musical instruments, composers, and techniques that correspond to each letter of the alphabet. Obviously, there are more than one of those things for each letter of the alphabet, so something you could do is have the students come up with other terms they may know that also start with that letter. In the picture book part of the book, it gives pictures, but no definitions. Luckily, in the back of the book, there is a paragraph to go with each letter defining the terms that the book listed. While reading this, they mentioned some instruments that I had never heard of before and having that little appendix was very helpful for me. The only criticism I have is that it said under "M", that Mozart makes you smarter, and this goes into further detail in the back of the book. Although this is a common assumption that people make about music and Mozart in particular, there is actually no direct correlation between Mozart and intelligence.
