Scott Eriksen: World of Music - Africa by Andrew Solway
World of Music - Africa by Andrew Solway gives a basic introduction to music that comes from Africa. It goes through the musical history of the continent and explains how African sounds can be found in genres that people today listen to on a regular basis. At the start of the book, some basic geographic information is there in case a student might not be familiar with Africa and the associated demographics. When talking specifically about the music, Solway points out what some typical African instruments are, as well as song forms like Call and Response, which is still popular today. There is a lot of instrumental history in the African continent and the book goes through explaining all the different types of instruments. This would be a valuable resource in the classroom if performing an African piece, or if the students were exploring the music and culture of Africa.
