Pete the Cat: Old MacDonald Had a Farm, Illustrated by James Dean, is a picture book designed to get children to engage in singing while they are reading a book. It takes the very familiar nursery rhyme and gives it a context with pictures and a main character that they can see in other similar books, Pete the Cat. A book like this is perfect for beginning elementary school students because it allows for shared reading, and give the music teacher a familiar song to start students singing on. A perfect way to combine a literary work with music. The book could also be used as an assessment tool to allow the teacher to listen in on individual student’s singing if students sung some sections as solos. Students may be more likely to sing a solo for a song they are very familiar with.
