Kate DeMonica:"Benny Goodman & Teddy Wilson"

"Benny Goodman & Teddy Wilson" by Lesa Cline-Ransome is a story that follows the lives of Teddy Wilson and Benny Goodman. It discusses the different music that they learned growing up, their different learning environments, and the different events that they played for. Eventually Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson meet up in the story and their two different worlds collide and form the Benny Goodman Trio, which was extremely successful. This story would be good in a music classroom because it goes over the different instruments found in a jazz band. Along with that, there are different onomatopoeia that describe what each of the instruments sound like. This book is also written with rhyme and rhythm patterns throughout. This helps children hear rhythm and make sound connections through text. Finally, this book teaches students that music can bring people together regardless of their differences.
