Cool Latin Music: Create & Appreciate What Makes Music Great! is a book by Mary Lindeen. While it may seem short, this book is packed full of information about latin music genres, instruments, rhythms, dances, and artists, as well as talking a little bit about music production. It doesn't have many pictures, but instead small paragraphs describing each genre, instrument, or dance. It even includes fun activities, such as making your own Cuica (a Brazilian drum), writing your own Salsa song, and dancing the Samba. I like that part best because it allows the students to interact with the music of the Latin American culture directly, instead of just reading a book about it and retaining information. This is something that a lot of elementary school kids would find entertaining and fun, and they would learn something from it too!
