Mama Don’t Allow
by Thacher Hurd tells the story of Mile’s and his new saxophone. His parents
and even the neighborhood begin to grow tired of his playing. Mile’s mother
asks him to practice his new saxophone outside. Miles forms a band with three
others to form what they call the “Swamp Band.” Their loud music suddenly peeks
interest, but their new audience seems odd. Miles and the Swamp Band are asked
to play at the Alligator Ball. At first, Miles and his band do not notice what
their fans have in store, but soon they catch on. They make their escape from
the hungry alligators by playing a lullaby, putting the alligators fast to
sleep. At the end, Miles receives praise from his mother for his soft playing
on his new saxophone. Hurd’s clear text and images make Mama Don’t Allow a fun and easy read.
