Swim! This book is about kids getting out and going swimming. They play in the pool together by swimming, floating, and playing catch. All of these things are helpful for physical education class because swimming is a great exercise that kids enjoy now and they can use to have fun and stay active doing for the rest of their life. The book also incorporates other aspects of physical education like playing catch. They were playing catch and swimming, which are two great activities to do to learn motor skills when younger and then continue to do these activities to stay active and healthy into adulthood. The friends in the book also got along while playing with each other so this is also another teacher point that being active is fun with friends, too.

Bing: Yuk! This book is about how Bing wants a snack and Flop offers him a yummy tomato. Bing doesn’t like the tomato but Flop tries to tell Bing that tomatoes are just like a bunch of other healthy foods that Bing likes. Bing likes bananas, Kiwis, apples, strawberries, and many other healthy foods but not tomatoes. This book is good to use to teach kids about a bunch of healthy fruits and vegetables they can eat to stay healthy. This is also a good book to use to show kids that even though you may not like one healthy snack, there are plenty of other healthy snacks they can love.

“Snowy Sports: Ready, Set, Play!” by Per-Henrik Gürth is a story that shows different types of sports that can be played in the winter; some examples given are curling, hockey, ski jumping, and ice skating. The name of each sport is printed clearly, with a picture of the sport on the same page, while one item that could be useful while playing this sport is pictured and labeled in the bottom corner. For example, skates are featured for speed skating. This book would be extremely useful for teaching in physical education because it gives children ideas of how to stay active outside of the classroom (which is the goal of physical education) and during the winter, which is the season that most people don’t get outside and get active because of the weather.

“D.W. the Picky Eater” by Marc Brown is a story of a little girl named D.W. who is an extremely picky eater and refuses to eat things that she hasn’t tried, especially healthy food. After a tantrum at a restaurant about spinach, her family decides they will only go out to eat without her, making her jealous. Finally on her Grandma’s birthday, D.W. decided she’d go out to eat with her family and actually ate what’s on the menu; she tried the “Little Bo Peep Pot Pie” and loved it, even after finding out it is packed with spinach, which showed her that even green, leafy foods can be delicious too. This book would be very useful for teaching in physical education, because eating healthy foods is a huge part of being healthy and goes hand-in-hand with physical activity, and this story shows children that eating healthy can be delicious.

“Miss Fox’s Class Shapes Up” by Eileen Spinelli is about a teacher who becomes aware that her students are not very healthy, so she helps them change their bad habits to good. There are many great tips listed throughout the book that Miss Fox gives to her class, like making sure to get enough sleep, eating healthy foods, eating breakfast, and exercising daily. In the end, this lifestyle change helps her class to win Field Day, and her students are extremely appreciative that Miss Fox helped them to make changes in their lives to become healthier children. This book would be enormously useful for teaching in physical education, because it gives great tips about how to live an all-around healthy lifestyle! It hits on fun ways to stay active, gives examples of healthy foods, and shares easy tips to being healthy that students could use in their own lives.

    The Bouncing, Dancing, Galloping ABC

“The Bouncing, Dancing, Galloping ABC” by Charlotte Doyle is a book that goes through each letter of the alphabet, but each letter has an activity that goes along with the letter. For example, “B is for bouncing up and down”. Each letter has some type of activity but not all are physical activities. Some involve healthy eating like the boy in the book ate eggs for the letter E. This book is really good to teach little kids the alphabet but also teaching them healthy habits. They can learn letters and get practice reading while also learning what activities they can do that are fun and helps them stay healthy. There are also lots of examples of different activities children can do in order to stay active. This includes activities they can do alone, with others, inside or outside. This is helpful to teach kids that they should be active outside of school.

    Angelina and Alice
“Angelina and Alice” by Katharine Holabird is about two mice who love to do gymnastics together. One day Angelina and Alice were practicing at school and Angelina fell and kids made fun of her. That day in PE class, they had to pick partners to do a gymnastics show with and Angelina thought no one would pick her but Alice did. The gym teacher taught them gymnastic skills and they put on a show for the town. This book shows kids that PE class is a place where you practice skills where no one is made fun. This is also good to show that physical education should be brought into the community and not only in school. This is also a good teaching moment by showing kids that in class it is good to help others if they are struggling instead of making fun of them.

    Little Yoga

“Little Yoga” by Rebecca Whitford and Martina Selway is a book about kids doing yoga like animals. A kid in the book does a yoga pose like an animal. A kid can sit like a frog or spread his arms like a butterfly. It is a book that little kids can do yoga poses along with. This would be great to use in class because I could read the book to the kids and as I read, the kids can follow along and do the yoga poses like the kids in the book. Yoga is very good for posture, stretching, toning, and breathing. Yoga also helps with concentration and relaxation. This book helps kids do yoga, which is active, and helps them read while learning about animals. The back off the book also has examples of the poses so teachers can teach the poses.

    From Head to Toe

“From Head to Toe” by Eric Carle is a book that involves different animals and kids moving different body parts. They start from the head and move their head. They then go to their neck and move all the way down to their toes. The animal says what animal they are and what body part they can move and then the kid say they can move that body part too. This book is good to read in class because while I am reading, they can move with the book. This is also good to teach kids different animals and to learn their body parts. Its important to teach their body parts since they need to know what and where they are in order to move. This would be a good warm-up at the beginning of class to get kids moving and get their brains working.

Keeping Fit from A to Z

“Keeping Fit from A to Z” by Stephanie Maze is a very informative book about many different physical activities kids can do for each letter of the alphabet. There are pictures of the kids doing each activity for each letter and under the picture is a description of the activity. The description of the activity is in English and Spanish. This is a really good book to inform kids about all the different activities they can do. This also helps kids to be able to read in English and Spanish, which is very important for kids to learn early on since it is easier to learn to read and understand languages early on. I could also read this book to the kids and ask questions about the activities and do the activities with them in class. There are activities they can do inside and outside of class.

    Davy, Soccer Star!

“Davy, Soccer Star!” by Briditte Weininger and Eve Tharlet is about a team of underdogs who beat a really good team in a soccer game. The underdog team is all rabbits and they practice really hard to beat a team of badgers and they beat them, even with a girl on the team. This book is good to use before a soccer unit. I can review the terms and how the game is played with the kids. We can practice in class how the team in the book practices. I can also use this to teach them that anyone of any size or gender can play soccer. I can also use this book to motivate kids to get out and play soccer. This can also be used to show kids that if you practice hard enough, you will see positive results in yourself and your game.

    Dino-Football

“Dino-Football” by Lisa Wheeler is about two teams of Dinosaurs who are playing in the Mega Bowl. The book tells us the story of what happens during the Mega bowl. The Mega Bowl is the Greenblade Snackers against the Redscales and the Sackers end up winning. This book is good to show how fun football can be and can also be used to tie in with a football unit or if the the football unit is during the same time the super bowl is. The book is good to teach them about the positions and rules of football before they start playing football. I can read them the book and then teach them the positions and rules of the game so this way they are able to remember back to the story to remember what was taught to them.

    Oddrey Joins the Team

“Oddrey Joins The Team” by Dave Whamond is about a girl named Oddrey joining the school soccer team. She tried playing like everyone else did but that didn’t work for her or her team come game time. They ended up switching up their playing style and even thought they lost, they still had fun. This book is good to get kids excited about getting involved in school sports or playing sports out of PE class. It also shows that sports can be fun even if you don’t win. Oddrey also shows Kids that it’s okay to do activities different and encourages kids to makeup their own games to play. I can also use this book to help get kids ready for a soccer unit by getting them familiar with soccer terms and how the game is played.

Movers & Shapers: Bones, Muscles, and Joints
“Movers & Shapers: Bones, Muscles, and Joints” by Dr. Patricia Macnair is a book about the different major muscle groups and other parts of the body. The book also includes sections covering things such as amputated limbs. The book focused mainly on presentable information, mixing pictures and short paragraphs. I think this book will be very useful to have in the classroom because of the information it has. I think the students will find it helpful to know about basic things such as major muscle groups and joints in the arms and legs. I think this will benefit the students because they will be able to see the different parts of their body which help determine the ways their body can move.

Rick Hansen: A Life in Motion
“Rick Hansen: A Life in Motion”, written by Don Quinlan, is a biography of Rick Hansen, a man in the wheelchair who wheeled himself around the world. It briefly covered the time Hansen spent before he required the wheelchair and covered the different phases of his life. This book really covered the emotional journey which Hansen had to overcome. I think this is a great book to have in a PE classroom because it can be used as a great motivational tool, both to overcome physical and monetary roadblocks in life. I would use this book to teach students that even though our circumstances in life may change, there are still opportunities and chances for us to have.

Life of Shouty: Food & Fitness
“Life of Shouty: Food & Fitness”, written by NeonSeon, is a picture book describing the life of a guy named Shouty. In this book, Shouty struggles with trying to keep his health under control while fighting the old habits and cravings for bad food he had built over time. This book isn’t the perfect story with the perfect storyline, but includes the actual feelings and experiences most people will have to overcome. This book is a great tool for introducing healthier life choices for students in the classroom. Everyone dreams of completing major feats of athleticism and good health, so it is good to have a book describing the different challenges everyone will face. I think this book will also be good for introducing different health concepts to the class, such as eating healthier foods or making smaller, better life choices.

“Bill’s Bike” by Andy Blackford and Hannah Wood is about a child named Bill who got a bike for his birthday. He started off using training-wheels, needing a total of four wheels, and then practiced enough that, with the help of his parents, he only needed three wheels, and then two wheels. He even tried to ride with one wheel before realizing that it was impossible! This book would be useful for teaching in physical education because, first of all, it depicts the fun that can be had while being active, and even gives a great example of a way to be active with your family, by riding bikes. It also can potentially get students to want to practice their skills at home, which is a big goal of physical education class, because this book shows that doing so can make you an expert at a skill, just like Bill!

“Everyone Can Learn to Ride a Bicycle” by Chris Raschka is about a child who learns to ride a bike with her father. After taking off her training wheels, she has numerous failed attempts before finally getting it down and riding on her own, all the while being helped and cheered on by her father! This book would be useful for teaching in physical education because it shows that physical activity can be fun and rewarding, especially when it’s with a good support system, like family. It also would teach my students that not all skills come naturally to everyone, so having perseverance, a positive attitude, and a good work ethic inside and outside of the classroom can aid you in mastering even the most difficult of motor skills.

“Bing: Yuk!” by Ted Dewan is a story about a bunny who wants a snack, but expresses that he really doesn’t like tomatoes. His friend names off a huge list of healthy foods that he does like, trying to convince him to try the tomatoes, but Bing continues to refuse, saying that although tomatoes just aren’t his thing, he will eat the other yummy, healthy snacks. This book would be useful for teaching in physical education because the main goal in general of PE is to get the students to adopt healthy habits, which includes aspects other than just physical activity, like having a healthy diet. This book gives a long list of healthy snacks for students to try, and makes them all sound exciting and delicious. It also shows that, even if you don’t like one healthy snack, you may still really enjoy others, and should continue to try them!

“Swim! (Board Buddies)” by Marilyn Brigham is a short story about a girl and her family swimming together. Basically, it just shows them in the pool together, swimming, playing catch, and floating around. This book would be useful for teaching in physical education because it shows different ways to be active outside of the classroom, like swimming and playing catch. It also portrays the children doing these activities with friends and family, showing that physical activity can be done with anyone and can be a great way to socialize. When students read this book, they will see that physical activity can be a lot of fun, and may not even seem like physical activity, like when swimming with family and friends!

    Mort the Sport
“Mort the Sport”, written by Robert Kraus, describes the story of an elephant named Mort. He’s the best of the animals at sports, and his father loves to come and watch and cheer him on especially at baseball games. However, Mort’s mother wants him to play the violin and to become a violin maestro, so Mort tries to do both to the best of his ability. However, soon the pressure begins to build up and Mort cracks and is unable to do either. His parents realize they put too much pressure on Mort and ask him what he wants to do, and Mort goes on to become one of the best chess masters in the world. This book is really good at connecting both sports and pressures students may feel, especially from their parents. I can use this book in a classroom when talking to students about excelling in multiple fields, but not letting the pressure of being the best bother them.

    The Berenstain Bears Play Ball
“The Berenstain Bears Play Ball”, written by Stan and Jan Berenstain, is a short story detailing what almost feels like the classic tale of parents pressuring their kids into sports. Papa Bear is determined to have Brother Bear become an All-Star at baseball, but he becomes so focused on this idea that he doesn’t realize that Brother Bear had other interests and wanted to play baseball for fun, not fame. He also fails to see Sister Bear was better at baseball. He realizes his errors when he sees how much fun Brother Bear had with his friends and after trying out Sister Bear for the team. This is a great book to incorporate all genders into sports instead of creating gender roles. This book can be effectively used in the classroom as a tool to emphasize the idea of sports as a way to have fun and to not let sports take control of all the other aspects of your life.

    D.W. the Picky Eater
“D.W. the Picky Eater” by Marc Brown is a part of the Arthur series. This book focuses on D.W., Arthur’s younger sister, and how she will not eat spinach, no matter what. Seeing no other options, the D.W.’s family decides to go out and eat without her. However, on her Grandma’s birthday dinner, D.W. is allowed to join the family and tries something new, and finds that she loves the food item even though it is packed with lots and lots of spinach, which she decides she loves. This book can be used to teach students that even though healthy foods look unappetizing and can appear a little intimidating with the label of healthy, they can still be delicious to eat. This is important for students to learn because eating healthy is something a lot of people struggle to do, even after they become adults.

Good Enough to Eat: A Kid’s Guide to Food and Nutrition
“Good Enough to Eat: A Kid’s Guide to Food and Nutrition” by Lizzy Rockwell is a descriptive way for children to learn about what makes a healthy and balanced diet from the foods they have available. While this book may be a little old (from 2009), it is still very informative yet is presented in a way children will understand. I think this will be a good book to have in the classroom or in the school library because the students should have access to the information about their diet whenever they can, especially if it is created to be a presentable and entertaining manner. Even if the students don’t initially understand the material, they should still learn about the basics, such as the portion of foods they should be eating (e.g. the Food Pyramid).

    Who Was Jackie Robinson?
“Who Was Jackie Robinson?” is a biography about Jackie Robinson written by Gail Herman and illustrated by Nancy Harrison for children to read. This biography covers a little of Jackie Robinson’s childhood and how his love for sports, athletic skill, and courage was key for him to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball. This book can be a great tool to introduce some important figures of baseball’s history as well as encouraging the students of differing backgrounds to find the courage to stick with the things they love and to stand up for themselves even in the face of adversity. While this book appears to be a book about baseball, it can be used to expand into different social issues.

    The Vegetables We Eat
“The Vegetables We Eat” written by Gail Gibbons is an informational book about the different vegetables we have at our disposal for consumption. This book has pictures, informative texts, and cross sections of the vegetables, resulting in a very enriching experience for the reader. While there was not much of a story, as this book was more of an informative children’s book, Gail Gibbons was able to make eating vegetables or trying new ones an interesting idea to try. I think this book will be a great addition to a health class because vegetables are one of the easiest foods to access in terms of healthy eating, yet so many students would rather eat foods which are not good for them. Learning more about the benefits of eating healthy foods, such as vegetables, could inspire more children to eat healthier. Developing healthy lifestyle changes should be the focus of all health classes.

Salt in His Shoes: Michael Jordan in Pursuit of a Dream
“Salt in His Shoes: Michael Jordan in Pursuit of a Dream”, written by Deloris Jordan, is a book about a boy, Michael, who was bullied on the basketball court near his home because he was smaller than the other kids. He was especially bullied by the tallest kid, who made it difficult for Michael to play. However, with a little prayer and practice, Michael was able to overcome his physical limits and excel. This book would be great to have for a basketball unit, as the story follows a boy who plays basketball. “The Bouncing, Dancing, Galloping ABC” by Charlotte Doyle is a book that simply goes through every letter of the alphabet and gives some type of fun and active activity to perform with every letter, with a brightly colored picture accompanying each activity. For example, one page says, “C is for climbing clear to the top,” and shows children climbing a bright red jungle gym, while another page says, “H is for hopping, hop, hop, hop,” and shows a child hopping on a pogo stick. This book would be useful for teaching in physical education because it gives children 26 different ideas of activities that they can participate in at home, rather than just sitting around. Physical education is all about getting children active outside of class, and this book would definitely help to make that possible by giving the students these active ideas, and by making them all look fun!

“Making the Team” by Nancy Carlson is about a pig named Louanne, who decides to try out for the cheerleading squad, and her friend, Arnie, who decides to try out for the football team! After lots of practicing, though, neither of them make the team that they wanted, but in the end Louanne actually makes the football team while Arnie makes the cheerleading squad! This book would be very useful for teaching in physical education because, first of all, it shows that being active can be done anywhere, whether it be in your backyard with your friend or as a part of a team at school! Secondly, it shows that physical activity is not gender specific, and all students should be able to participate in whatever type of physical activity that they enjoy, which is a great message to get the students active and having fun outside of class!

“Brendan and Belinda and the Slam Dunk!” by Anne Rockwell is a story about twin pigs who are extremely good at basketball, and their father pushes them to be the best that they can be by having them go over plays and join multiple leagues, but overtime this exhausts them. They love the sport and want to play, but they also realize that they want to be kids and have some fun, and in the end their father realizes it should be about fun and not about becoming “superstars”. This book would be very useful for teaching in physical education because it sends the message that working hard is good, but having fun with physical activity is most important. We want kids to want to be active, instead of simply because they feel forced to, so that it will continue with them for the rest of their lives!
