The Mad Potter George E. Ohr: Eccentric Genius
The Mad Potter is a biographical picture book about the ceramic artist George E. Ohr. His nickname, the "Mad Potter", was due to the fact that he utilized his pots with a new twist (literally). His pots, practically paper thin, was manipulated in a way that they often looked ruffled, folded, and wrinkled. Ohr's humor transferred to his master pottery skills and his pottery demonstrations often became impressive, comical performances. The authors of the biography mentioned that during his time, no one really wanted his work. But in the ceramics world now, his work is highly prized and his master craft is admired. This biography is a helpful art educating tool as it is a classic way of studying specific artists and their creations. Teachers can even build a curriculum around George Ohr’s ceramics as it involves many ceramic techniques such as pinching, throwing on the potter’s wheel, and handbuilding.
