Lester Fizz, Bubble-Gum Artist by Ruth Spiro and Thor Wickstrom

Lester Fizz's family are all artists.  His dad, Winslow, works in watercolors, his mom, Dorothea, does photography, and his cousin Cornell creates collections.  Lester Fizz believes he doesn't have any artistic talent compared to his family, and all he does all day is chew gum.  He really wants to create art and enter something in the family museum (which is just the refrigerator door).  One day, his Uncle Edgar gave him some words of encouragement for artistic inspiration.  He asked Lester "What do you see?  What don't you see?  What do you want to see?".  That's when something in Lester clicked, he realized he can blow fantastic bubbles of sculpture art.  His school was holding an art contest and it was Lester's chance to impress his family and show him that he's a true artist.  With a lot of practice and determination, Lester won the contest and proved himself.  In the classroom, the questions Uncle Edgar used are great topics for arts observation and discussion.  Also, Lester's relatives are based on real artists and their mediums.  This book would be a good transition to study specific artists and art history.
