Anna Burton: Rock n Roll Mole

Rock ‘n’ Roll Mole

Rock ‘n’ Roll Mole, by Carolyn Crimi, is a book about Mole, a funky guy who loves wearing shades, a leather jacket, and shreds on guitar like nobody’s business. Everyone at school thinks Mole is so cool, and assumes he’s just as talented as he is cool. The only thing is that Mole gets stage fright even at the thought of having to perform in front of anyone other than his best friend Pig. Pig decides to organize a talent show in order to bring Mole out of his shell, but Mole refuses to play and offers to at least help set up for the show. BUT, an unexpected disaster occurs, and Pig’s ipod breaks! Mole gains the courage to play anyway and help Pig out so they can perform together! Using this book in a music classroom would be great to get students thinking about participating in music in other ways outside of the classroom, as well as showing students that it’s possible to overcome stage fright and be supportive of other musicians. It could also be a good way to incorporate literacy into a unit on rock and roll music!
