The sound that Jazz Makes is a children’s book that explains
some of the brief history of slavery in America, and the conception and
evolution of Jazz through this awful historical fact. The book binds beautiful
illustrations with bits of history to explain the earliest forms of jazz,
singing blues songs in the fields, as well as the big band version of this
genre. This book would be very useful in an elementary setting, as it couples
history with the great tradition of jazz in an informal way. An educator could
very easily build a jazz section around this book and really be able to teach
their students a lot.
