Anne Johnson - Snow Music

Snow Music
By Lynne Rae Perkins

This book has a ton of potential for class interaction! The plot is sort of vague. If you’re paying attention, you can tell that the main drama is a lost dog, and children looking for him. But the book frequently deviates from this narrative to portray a quiet deer, or a loud car, or a confused squirrel. These pages are an opportunity to take a break and let the class be really loud, or to check for comprehension. A teacher could ask questions like “What do you think the squirrel might be looking for?” Sometimes, the book asks questions, like, “What is the sound of one bird hopping?” This could be an opportunity for students to get up and hop around. This is a book that a class could spend a considerable amount of time on. There’s no really clear stream of thought in this book. Its value is not in its story line, but it’s interactive quality.
