Willy's Pictures is about a chimp who likes to paint stories inspired by famous works of art. His iterations of famous paintings include animals and playful imagery with mundane, silly captions. Some of the paintings were influenced by "The Creation of Adam" by Michelangelo, Fridah Kahlo's self portraits, "The Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli, and the "Mona Lisa" by Leonardo da Vinci to name a few. At the end of the story, the author and illustrator invites the readers to match the famous paintings to Willy's versions using a paint catalog. The catalog contains the painting, the artist, date of work, and a short description about the art. For the classroom, this book offers an interesting take on how to study art history and art making. Imitation is a valid form of art learning as it provides students the understanding of the original artist's process and idea.
