This Is My Song! A Collection of Gospel Music for the Family by By Higginsen--pictures by Brenda Joysmith--is an anthology of various gospel arrangements written for piano and voice. The musical arrangements in the book, written by Wesley Naylor, are very simple and are always in unison, which could be great for a young choir. Being February, which is Black History Month, this book could serve as a great resource for a general music classroom during February in which young students can be educated about black history through music (spirituals, gospel tunes, etc). The teacher would play the piano to accompany the students after teaching them the part. Each song includes a short explanation of the song's background--this could be used not only to improve literacy, but also--in the realm of music--stress the importance of knowing a piece's background before performing it. The explanations also give simple performance instructions, which could help test student's comprehension and retention of directions. -- Simon Tiffin
