Raccoon Tune by Nancy Shaw, Illustrated by Howard Fine is a book about the late night escapades of a raccoon family. It is a very fun book with cute illustrations. The text is also very rhythmic and has a very obvious rhyming pattern. There is a lot a teacher could work with to get the kids involved in this book. While I was reading it, I just tapped out a rhythm that felt like it went along with the text, so the kids could get up and stomp the rhythm while the teacher reads it to them. There is also the potential to write out a really easy and repetitive melody. There are a few words that might fly over the heads of early learners, like those in kindergarten through 2nd grade, so before the book is taught, you could pull out those words and define them before reading the book. You could also make inferences with the class beforehand about what the book may be about and then do a check in again after you read it together and do a "was this prediction right/wrong" sort of thing. There are also a lot of verbs and actions that the kids could play out while reading this book. It would be a lot of fun for early general music.
