Mother's Song, adapted by Ellin Greene is a musical poem that is told from the perspective of a mother to her child. The text is really lovely, and provides some nice imagery about what a mother's love is similar to, describing various beautiful things in nature that still do not compare to the beauty of a mother's unconditional love for their child. The reading is a bit higher level for elementary schoolers, which I think this story is most useful for, so I would teach it in a shared reading setting. There are certain words and animals that the children will not know, so the teacher will have to look them up with the kids. It is a beautiful song, and I could see this book used potentially on a coir concert because there is a relatively, almost unison (until the last two notes) melody and very easy piano part that the kids will not get confused by. it could be done in conjunction with the children's reading classes, where they could read and discuss this in their class, and then perform it in choir.I would imagine this being used in 1st-4th grade as a book. There are really lovely illustrations that connect with the text f the poem as well, so there are connections to be made there.
