Hello, I'm Johnny Cash is a surprisingly informative storybook/biography hybrid of the late country singer. The beautiful illustrations and large print-layout of the book suggest at a quick glance that it might not contain much information, but the young reader will find a detailed bird's-eye view of Cash's life in reading it. Starting with the struggles in Johnny Cash's early childhood brought on by The Great Depression, the story continues with Cash's witnessing the death of his closest companion, his older brother, his ties to Southern Baptism and, of course, his eventual ascent to the Billboard charts as a country musician. The detailed illustrations not only capture a remarkable likeness of Johnny Cash, but also transport the reader to the the various environments of Cash's life: a depression-era childhood on a farm, vast expanses of Tennessee nature, the excitement of performing in front of large audiences. Overall, the appealing presentation of the book will be attractive to any young reader, but certain thematic elements and denser-than-expected text content make this book mostly appropriate for ages 8 and up.
