James McNair-Swamp Song
"Swamp Song" by Helen Ketteman (with illustrations by Ponder Goembel) uses a repetitive small-stanza formula that is perfect for shaping phonemes with young readers. This is due to the cycling of onamonapias associated with each individual animal which is later brought back in juxtaposition with the others in the story. In addition to supporting phoneme development/recognition, Swamp Song also touches on the organization of a musical ensemble, and how each part is independent yet important to the others. Furthermore, it also points to the idea of a lead part that is central to an ensemble. This early reading picture book is a good phoneme developer as well as an abstract introduction to musical ensembles.
