James McNair - John's Secret Dreams

From humble rough beginnings leaving to live with his aunt and uncle at 5 to meeting Paul McCartney, to the Vietnam War, "John's Secret Dreams: The life of John Lennon" highlights it all. Each page will give early readers a chance to interact with a critical point in John's life in a concise, chapter-esque fashion. Each chapter illustrated by Bryan Collier, and made to reflect the scene described but also a relevant song to the event at hand. This linking of song and story gives a unique history to the life of Lennon accompanied with the soundtrack of his success simultaneously. While this blending can be appreciated by proficient readers and those familiar with Lennon's career, i see how various elements can become confusing or seem mismatched. For instance: describing Yoko Ono's interaction with Lennon in London sandwiched in describing the Beatles' growing world-wide success. Jump-cuts aside, the blending of song and story really makes "John's secret dreams" a unique read, and adds tone to text, making storytelling more engaging for early readers.
