Thump, Thump, Rat-a-Tat-Tat by Gene Baer is a children's picture book that describes the coming and going of a marching band. It starts with the band far away, and uses crickets and ants to describe the quietness of the sound. As the band approaches nearer, the author uses lions and birds to describe how loud the sound is. The book also uses different words to describe the sounds, like festive and colorful. When the band is closest, there is small print next to all of the instruments, saying their name. This can teach children that distant and volume are closely related, and gets them used to thinking outside normal parameters.
