Anne Johnson- Yankee Doodle

Yankee Doodle
By Mary Ann Hoberman & Nadine Bernard Westcott

This is the well-known children’s song “Yankee Doodle”, adapted to a brightly illustrated children’s book. It has more verses than I knew existed, and comes with a page of musical notation that explains the melody of the song, should it be unfamiliar. The plot is a wild ride, which starts with a lonely Yankee Doodle and ends with a successful pasta restaurant. The book could be read to a class along with a steady rhythm, or sung. On the last page, the publisher suggests what other activities could accompany the reading of this book (like, “Count the characters that ride on Yankee Doodle’s pony”).
