Anne Johnson- Honeyky Hanukah

Honeyky Hanukah
By Woody Guthrie
Pictures by Dave Horowitz

I’m not sure what “honeyky” means, if it means anything. This is a picture book adaptation of a fun song by Woody Guthrie about the joys of the Jewish Hanukah celebration. The book is accompanied by a CD recording of the song by the Klezmaniacs. It would be good to read this during the holiday season, especially with the abundance of Christmas books and songs. Students would be introduced to Jewish traditions like latkes, honeycakes, and menorahs. Plus, the CD would expose students to a genre of instrumental music they may not be very used to. It isn’t difficult to turn pages and keep up with the recording, though students might want more time to look at the pictures.
