The Laughing River - Elizabeth Haze Vega
The Laughing River is a phenomenal children’s book written by Elizabeth Haze Vega that can be used in educating children on music. It is a story that encompasses a modern folktale that has its roots in African history. Not only does the book bring about cultural awareness, but it also written to use the Orff process in teaching children music. The Orff process incorporates, movement, music, and a story. The songs in this book incorporate simple rhythms and songs that students can learn to sing or play on Orff instruments. The tale of of two African tribes, the Funga, and the Alafia. The strong, brave Funga people were upset because the happy music of the Alafia people echoed off the mountain and floated into the territory of the Funga people. After the argument was started, the Alafia people quickly offered peace to the situation by singing to the Funga a song that welcomed them with an open mind, love, and lack of weapons. After coming to an understanding, the two tribes come together to make music. This book is a great music learning tool for children of all ages that can be used as a resource in elementary classrooms.
