"The Story of the
Orchestra" by Robert Levine is a great multimedia book that exposes
children to classical music. “Orchestra Bob”, the “maestro” of the story, takes
you on a two-part journey through music history and the symphony orchestra,
where you learn everything from Bach to Bernstein, trumpet to violin to
vuvuzela. I think this book is relevant and important for several reasons. The
first is the illustration of Orchestra Bob; he is illustrated very handsomely
with hands in his pockets, cool sunglasses, and dressed in a nice tuxedo. This
can really help children associate boring classical music with being cool, like
Orchestra Bob, and opens up their learning more. The second is the multimedia
part of it. Not only does the book go at great length to explain concepts
clearly, but it has an accompanying CD where for early learners can reinforces
connections between text-audio-real life.
