88 Instruments written by Chris Barton is a book about a young boy whose parents have brought him to an instrument shop. The boy’s parents have offered to pay for him to begin music lessons on one instrument. But only one. He goes through the store and counts all the instruments, and is overwhelmed by the fact that he has to make this difficult decision. Which would he choose? The book continues with the boy comparing the instruments with rhyming adjectives that, in most cases, describes how the instrument sounds. In the end, the small boy finally comes to a consensus on what instrument he would like to start learning, and although he admits to the complexity of the instrument, he is motivated to begin learning taking small steps at a time.
