Simon Tiffin - Should I Play The Flute?

Should I Play The Flute?

In Nicola Barber's book Should I Play The Flute, Barber touches on various aspects to consider before deciding to play the flute. Barber starts with asking why people play musical instruments and how the flute, specifically, makes its sound. The book then discusses the musical family which the flute is from and what types of music are playable on the various flutes of the family. The book closes by discussing who plays the flute, how one would learn to play the flute, and various recordings to listen to. There is also a timeline of flute history and glossary for those who need help with some of the bolded vocabulary words. I believe that this text could be useful in a 2nd or 3rd grade classroom to not only help students decide which instrument that they want to play in band or orchestra, but also in learning some vocabulary associated with their possible instrument. This book is a good way to gauge which words are too difficult for young students to understand and helps a teacher know which words to spend more time on. Additionally, the book contains a small portion about flutes around the world, promoting inclusivity within the classroom.
