“Percussion” by Alyn Shipman is an informational book on
what a percussion instrument is and how to make your own percussion
instruments. It then goes into detail on the different types of percussion
instruments. Specifically it goes into detail on the xylophone, vibraphone,
drums, timpani, cymbals, drum set, and percussion from around the world. This
book is filled with diagrams, photographs, and illustrations that relate with
the vocabulary terms that are highlighted on each page. This book is useful in
a music classroom because it does an excellent job organizing all of the
percussion instruments into categories and comparing and contrasting them to
reveal how they are all unique. The diagrams, photographs, and drawings all
relate and make the many concepts in this book and make it easy for students to
understand. I also really enjoy how after learning about all of the different
areas of percussion, there is a section on how to make your own instrument and
apply what was learned through music.
