Angela Wenzel – 13 artists’ children should know

This book is a brief introduction to 13 famous artists that are some important figures in art history. Each section of the artists’ introduction tells us about where and when they lived and worked. All of these artists mentioned were famous painters and some of their most well-known works are also featured in this book. These 13 artists’ include Leonardo da Vinci, Jan Vermeer, Claude Monet, Henri Rousseau, Mary Cassatt, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Paul Klee, Franz Marc, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Frida Kahlo, and Andy Warhol. Not only is their history included but also some significant points in world history are used to reference the life of the artist. This would be a great tool to have in the classroom as a reference to what artists should be explored in that unit. Learning about artists in this simple way would be more beneficial to students because they would be able to take books like these home and study them more. Reading about the way the artist worked can inspire their own works. This book also does a very good job of showing specific things that students should focus on when studying a certain artists. The author does this by providing notes on the side and giving zoomed in details of certain paintings. However one of the best things that the author added was suggested for further reading notes. With new books to look at a student can easily continue to learn more.
