Mari Elias- Carnival of the Animals

"Carnival of the Animals" is a piece written by composer Saint-Saens but also the name of this book, with commentary by Barrie Carson Turner. The beginning of the book gives an introduction to the reader about the composer and the piece, along with the different types of instruments that are used to play this piece and what different animals they can represent musically. Then the book dives into each movement of the whole piece and the author writes about what is happening and asks the reader questions to see if they can visualize what's happening just by listening to the movement. Of course this book comes along with a CD for the readers to follow along with. I love this book and it would be so wonderful to use in the classroom. I've observed a class where the teacher worked on each of the movements of this piece with her students but they listened to it and answered questions outloud as a class. I think if she, or any teacher, had this book while doing this with their students, it would help them visualize and make better connections since the book has text to go along with each movement as well as visuals.
