Simon Tiffin - If You're Happy and You Know It!

Simon Tiffin

If You're Happy And You Know It

In Jane Cabrera's book If You're Happy and You Know it, Cabrera utilizes pictures and easy text to describe various activities. She starts by having imagery of a monkey clapping and describes clapping your hands together. She then moves on to show an elephant for the idea of stamping one's feet. Various animals continue to be associated with a number of actions--Giraffes nodding, lions roaring, and birds flapping wings. This could be an amazing resource in a young general music classroom (likely k-5) to introduce ideas of rhythm, ensemble cooperation, and body percussion. The book causes students to have to read text and interpret to mean utilizing various parts of the body showing whether or not students are comprehending the actions in the text. It also keeps students up and on their feet so that no one is antsy or bored.
