The Sounds of Music shows kids that music can be found everywhere that you look. L.C Casterline and Lane Yerkes work together to make understanding different instruments very easy for children. Yerkes, the illustrator, allows every picture to correlate directly to the thoughts on the page. Each instrument is drawn beautifully and becomes very clear which one the author is talking about on the page. Casterline does a wonderful job of making the story line flow. All of the different animals are playing different genres of music, which shows kids that music can be played in many different ways. The author also explains that you don't necessarily have to be playing music to enjoy it. Music can make you feel like dancing or it can help understand emotions that you are having problems expressing. I would use this book in a Kindergarten music class to demonstrate that music can be found everywhere and to give a visual to a lot of popular instruments that I will exposing them to in the classroom.
