Before John Was a Jazz Giant by Carole Boston Weatherford

This book is called Before John Was a Jazz Giant by Carole Boston Weatherford and illustrated by Sean Qualls.  This book tells the story of John Coltrane's life growing up in the south before he was famous.  I chose this book because it features a minority as the center of the story, which would be relatable to many students.  It is empowering for students to see characters who look like them and who are successful musicians.
